Here’s the simple version: a tummy tuck is one procedure that focuses specifically on the abdomen. A mommy makeover is a combination of procedures — typically performed in a single surgery — that addresses multiple areas of the body at once.

Let me break both of them down.

The Tummy Tuck: Focused on the Abdomen

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) addresses everything happening in the midsection:

  • Excess skin and fat on the abdomen are removed
  • Separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) are repaired — this is often the most transformative part of the procedure
  • The belly button is repositioned to a natural location
  • The overall contour of the waist and lower abdomen is reshaped

For patients whose primary concern is the abdomen — whether from pregnancy, weight changes, or aging — a tummy tuck on its own is often exactly the right procedure.

I also routinely combine liposuction with a tummy tuck to refine the flanks, hips, and waist. This isn’t technically part of the tummy tuck itself, but it’s a very common pairing that gives patients a more complete transformation of the midsection.

The Mommy Makeover: Addressing the Full Picture

A mommy makeover is a term used to describe a personalized combination of procedures designed to address the changes that happen to a woman’s body through pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. The defining feature is that everything is done together — in one surgery, under one anesthesia, with one recovery.

There’s no single “standard” mommy makeover. It’s built around what each individual patient actually needs. That said, the most common combination I perform includes:

  • Tummy tuck to address the abdomen and muscle separation
  • Breast surgery — whether that’s a breast lift, augmentation, reduction, or some combination, depending on what pregnancy and nursing have done to the breasts
  • Liposuction to address areas like the hips, flanks, or thighs that have been resistant to diet and exercise

Some patients need all three components. Others need two. The plan is always individualized.

Which One Is Right for You?

This comes down to what’s actually bothering you and what your goals are.

A tummy tuck alone makes sense if:

  • Your main concern is your abdomen — loose skin, a belly pooch, a weak or separated core
  • You’re happy with your breasts and not looking to address other areas
  • You want a focused procedure with a more straightforward recovery

A mommy makeover makes sense if:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding has changed your breasts and your abdomen
  • You want to address multiple areas but don’t want to go through multiple separate surgeries and recoveries
  • Combining procedures under one anesthesia is appealing to you from a practical and financial standpoint

Combining procedures does mean a single, longer surgery and a more involved recovery — but for many patients, handling everything at once is far preferable to doing it in stages. One recovery versus two or three is a real quality-of-life consideration, especially for busy moms.

Is a Mommy Makeover Safe?

Yes, when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in an accredited facility on an appropriate candidate. Longer surgeries do carry additional considerations, and I evaluate every patient carefully to ensure the combination of procedures planned is safe for their individual health profile.

The key factors I look at: overall health, anesthesia time, the extent of each procedure, and recovery expectations. For healthy patients who are good surgical candidates, combining procedures is very commonly done and very well tolerated.

You Don’t Have to Be a Mom

Despite the name, a mommy makeover isn’t exclusively for mothers. I perform these combination procedures on patients whose bodies have changed from weight fluctuations, aging, or simply the passage of time. The concept — addressing multiple areas in one surgery — applies to anyone who has more than one area they’d like to improve. The “mommy” in mommy makeover is just how the term entered the popular vocabulary.

How Do We Figure Out the Right Plan for You?

This is exactly what consultations are for. When you come in, we’ll talk about every area that concerns you, look at what’s actually going on structurally, and I’ll give you my honest recommendation about what will get you the result you’re looking for — whether that’s a focused tummy tuck, a full mommy makeover, or something in between.

There’s no pressure and no one-size-fits-all answer. My job is to help you understand your options so you can make the decision that’s right for you.
