Female Hair loss

Female hair loss will affect 1 in 4 women. This generally presents slightly different than the male pattern baldness. Women often will maintain the hairline; however will experience a generalized thinning of the hair, due primary to miniaturizing of hair follicles, this makes the existing hair seem much thinner.

Eyebrow Transplant and restoration

Eyebrows may be lost of thinning due to a variety of issues including thyroid problems, burns, plucking, infections or genetics. Eyebrow restoration is similar to hair restoration with some slight differences.  Eyebrows grow at very different angles and grow as individual strands. In eyebrow restoration it is very important to follow the natural direction of the hairs. Although these procedures don’t harvest as many units as a typical hair restoration they may be just as time intensive.

Hair Loss history and science

Hair restoration surgery dates back to the 1930’s when a Japanese dermatologist used a punch technique to extract round sections of hair, which were then implanted into slightly smaller holes. This procedure was performed for cosmetic coverage of burns and scars. Several years later a New York Dermatologist would perform the first known hair transplant in the U.S.  In the early 90’s surgical hair restoration finally began producing a more natural result, and today many robots and machines are assisting the surgeon in producing undetectable hair replacement.

Strip follicular transplant

This is an older type of hair restoration that is still primarily used today. In this process a large strip is harvested from the back of the scalp, then cut into smaller pieces and re-implanted into the balding area. This often left many patients with a very artificial look with a large scar on the back of the scalp. Often these scars are not seen do to hair growth; however these people can rarely shave their heads or have short hair due to the cosmetic issues associated with the scar. This method caused great trauma to the scalp requiring a significant recovery time, and suboptimal results when compared to modern techniques.  While this option is less expensive than our methods, we feel that it is simply not up to the standards we expect from every procedure we offer.

Follicular unit transplantation (FUE):

The FUE method or micro graft method removes individual hair follicles from the scalp in their naturally occurring groupings of about 1 - 4 hairs, and the hairs are then further dissected into individual follicles and are then placed in the areas of the scalp where balding has occurred. One of the keys to natural looking hair is to minimize trauma to the scalp and the hair follicles.  While this is a great option for patients, our commitment to being the best at what we do has brought us into the next generation of hair replacement. This method is so precise it can restore hair, eyebrows, and even individual eyelashes.

The next generation of micro grafting (NeoGraft )

Our state of the art NeoGraft system automates surgical removal, collection, and placement of individual hair follicles, one at a time, eliminating the need for doctors to remove a large strip from the back of the scalp (a procedure known as a linear-harvest Follicular Unit Transplant or STRIP FUT). The system is so precise it is capable of removing targeting individual follicles, which are harvested intact and are then implanted beck into individual follicles that have been lost.

Our advanced system offers our male and female patients a no-scalpel/no-stitch option for FUE hair transplants, with the ability to return to work the next day. The NeoGraft allows us to preform an extremely effective micro surgical procedure that allows for the precise, artistic placement of new hair follicles to recreate a full and natural-looking hairline, while reducing recovery time and eliminating the unsightly linear scar associated with traditional hair transplants. How do I know I’m a good candidate?

Candidates for hair restoration surgery are those individuals in good health with moderate hair loss and sufficient donor hair on the back of the scalp to transplant into the balding areas. Those with more donor hair, greater hair density and fullness can typically expect fuller results. It is also important that you have reasonable cosmetic goals. Hair transplantation can achieve very good, natural results but cannot restore your hair to the density you had as a teenager.  In an effort to serve our patients that are not the right fit for this procedure due to financial concerns or poor candidacy we have partnered with EZIO one of the countries best known wig and toupee makers, and laser hair replacement therapy as well as hair replacement products are available right next door.

How is NeoGraft performed?

Hair transplantation is a process in which hair is taken from the back of the head or donor area and replaced in areas where hair loss has occurred. The NeoGraft system uses a special technology that is able to quickly remove the hair follicles from the donor area and implant them to balding areas. NeoGraft uses a controlled pneumatic pressure to slide out the graft smoothly, so there is no pulling or twisting which can risk damaging the graft. Because the NeoGraft transplant is faster than other out of date methods, the grafts can be re-implanted sooner which keeps them more robust, increasing the success of the grafting process.

How soon will I see results?

The science behind grafting is quite simple. Hair follicles are taken from the hair at the back or side of the head that is genetically programmed to continue to grow. The follicles that hold your transplanted hair are living tissues that grow cyclically. Like normal hair growth, transplantation is an ongoing process that requires a commitment of time.
Once the hair follicle has been implanted into the balding area, the grafted hair will stay in place for about two to three weeks before shedding. After shedding, the new growth will begin in 3-4 months; this is normal and an important part of the new hair growth process. After that time period, the hair will continue to grow normally; your result will look healthy and natural.

How long will the hair last?

Transplanted hair taken from the sides and back of your head in safe areas should continue to grow the rest of your life just like it did in the donor area. Men can begin to develop signs of male pattern baldness in their twenties and hair loss can begin at any time in their adult lives. For women, hair loss is usually more of a thinning or diffuse pattern and often appears as they reach the age of 55-60.

Hair loss does not stop after a transplantation, some people will need continuing maintenance either with preventative hair loss drugs and/or further hair restoration sessions, particularly if your balding patterns continue with age. Progressive hair loss or the desire for more density may require more transplants. An estimate of balding pattern and the number of procedures needed will be discussed during your consultation.

Treatment

Propecia (Finasteride) - Propecia can effective lower DHT levels by as much as 60% which helps to abate the miniaturization of the hair follicles. It is recommended by the American Hair Loss Association as the first line of attack in treating male pattern baldness. One of the main side effects of Propecia is a pronounced decrease in sex drive.

Minoxidil (loniten)

Minoxidil was the first FDA approved drug for the treatment of male pattern baldness. This drug does carry a very adverse side effect of growing hair on unepected places including, cheeks, bank of hands, or the forehead. These drugs have been shown to provide advantageous benefits in hair loss however do carry some substantial side effects and can be costly. You also must continue taking these medications for optimal benefits.
